The marvel of subjective consciousness does not consist solely of the fact that the Outside is somehow reflected into a fragile Inside posited as its mirror. The true mystery, rather, lies in the delicate doubling of that reflection – the Inside is not a simple image of the Object, a plain Reinhold-ian mental representation; it is, at the same time, a dislocation of the experience of that reflection, a “short circuit” through which the image in the mirror comes to experience itself as a primary givenness, independently of the position of the Object.

In that sense, the Inside is precisely the frenzy of the reflection, the transcendental Doubling that makes the original reflection possible…
